Con or Bust now on Twitter, Tumblr, and (still) LiveJournal!

Con or Bust, which helps fans of color attend SFF cons, now has its own accounts on Twitter and Tumblr! These should be automagically updated with new post notifications from the main site here at http://con-or-bust.org/. Feel free to follow Con or Bust on Twitter or follow Con or Bust on Tumblr.

I have also set up crossposting to the existing LiveJournal community, for the convenience of those who’d like to keep following Con or Bust there.

And, naturally, there’s always the all-purpose RSS option.

Reminders: Con or Bust’s annual online fundraising auction starts taking bids on February 9, but you can submit things to be auctioned now or check out the current offerings! More information about the auction. And Con or Bust will be taking requests for assistance to attend cons in April, May, and June from February 15-25; how to request assistance.

Thanks, and please spread the word!

Sf/f short story critique

Item Name & Description: Critique of a sf/f short story up to 7,500 words. I have published a number of short stories (Clarkesworld, F&SF, Tor.com, Lightspeed). If you’d like to talk about possible markets and whether your story is ready to be submitted, I’m happy to do that, too.

I’m willing to critique fanfic, but please check with me first regarding (a) fandom (my range here is limited) and (b) audience/subject material. I do militaristic sf most of the time, so if you are writing a Regency romance AU with werewolves, I’m probably not your best bet.

Starting Bid: $25.00.

Notes: Delivered within two weeks. Please have the story ready when the auction is over. You should save the story in standard manuscript format, RTF or .doc, for original fiction.

Bidding opens on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time and closes Sunday, February 24, 2013 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. More Information.

Camel/Silk Neckwarmer

Item Name & Description: Camel/Silk Neckwarmer:

Last year, I had the good fortune to win an auction of camel/silk yarn handspun by SairaAli: (link here, scroll down to the second photo). The minute I got my hands on this lovely stuff, I knew it needed to be knitted into something cuddly that would be in direct contact with my skin, in a textured stitch that would let it be its fluffy self. Pictured below is the resulting neckwarmer, which you cannot have because it is mine, all mine.

However, there is enough yarn left for me to make you your *very own* super-soft neckwarmer. I’ll use what I’ve learned from mine, and make yours slightly wider and shorter (roughly 6” x 22”, or 15 cm x 56 cm), and place the buttons a little differently so the neckwarmer stays put better. I doubt I can get more of the exact same copper buttons; the auction winner will have a chance to express an opinion about what style of button I should shop for.

I will mail anywhere in North America at no additional cost; for other continents I would ask the auction winner for an additional donation equal to shipping costs. Allow two to three weeks for knitting after we discuss buttons.

Pillow Cookies

Item Name & Description: Pillow cookies are a fantastic cookie, where you take a base cookie (like, say, some nomtastic sweet and salty chocolate chip cookies) and wrap the dough around a delicious doughy concoction (like brownies, blondies, white chocolate brownies, or pumpkin brownies). Then: BAKING! You see them all the time at local county fairs — they’re the huuuuge, round cookies with the moist, soft, chocolatey center. These are ginormous cookies — so instead of a full dozen, I normally make 10 at a time. I’m offering to make 10 pillow cookies (combo of your choice), and mail them to you usps priority. NEW THIS YEAR: I’ve found a recipe for srichacha peanut butter cookies that I am DYING to try with a dark chocolate brownie. If the bidding goes over 30, I’ll include a batch of this experiment if you want — or another experimental recipe, since I actually have a queue.

Starting Bid: $10

Notes: If I can’t make something, I’ll work with you for a substitute. I make fantastic cookies! It’ll probably take me a week to put together the ingredients, but I’ll send it USPS priority and let you know when I ship
