Anuja Chauhan box set

Item Name & Description: box set of Anuja Chauhan’s novels, including Those Pricey Thakur Girls, Battle for Bittora and The Zoya Factor

book covers

Starting Bid: $10

Notes: Last year, Deepa started The Anuja Chauhan Reading Club, where she passed out copies of Anuja Chauhan’s three published novels, which are currently only available for purchase in India. Each person read the book and then sent it on to the next person in the club. I got to read all three (my reviews: The Zoya Factor, Battle for Bittora, and Those Pricey Thakur Girls) and enjoyed them very much! I thought I’d like to give more people outside India an opportunity to read and enjoy these books, which is why I’m offering this box set up for auction. Please note that I ordered the books from an online retailer in India, and I’m getting a friend to receive the delivery and ship them to the winning bidder, so it may take a while to receive the books. However, I will cover all shipping costs.

An uncorrected proof of Benjamin Parzybok’s Sept. 2014 novel Sherwood Nation

Item Name & Description: In drought-stricken Portland, Oregon, a Robin Hood-esque water thief is caught on camera redistributing an illegal truckload of water to those in need. Nicknamed Maid Marian—real name: Renee, a 20-something barista and eternal part-time college student—she is an instant folk hero. Renee rides her swelling popularity and the public’s disgust at how the city has abandoned its people, raises an army . . . and secedes a quarter of the city.

Even as Maid Marian and her compatriots build their community one neighbor at a time, they are making powerful enemies amongst the city government and the National Guard. Sherwood is an idealistic dream too soon caught in a brutal fight for survival.

Sherwood Nation is the story of the rise and fall of a micronation within a city. It is a love story, a war story, a grand social experiment, a treatise on hacking and remaking government, on freedom and necessity, on individualism and community.

And, it is not out until September!

Benjamin Parzybok is the author of the novel Couch and has been the creator/co-creator of many other projects, includingGumball Poetry, The Black Magic Insurance Agency (city-wide, one night alternate reality game), and Project Hamad. He lives in Portland with the artist Laura Moulton and their two kids.

[Admin edit: in comments, the author offers to send the winner “the winner a lovely postcard, probably with a drawing or two, that may be used as the book’s bookmark.”]

Starting Bid: $5

Notes: US/Canada only

Description of Half-Asian, All Hero:

Johnny Hiro, a hardworking busboy, lives in Brooklyn with his flighty but lovable girlfriend Mayumi. Every day, he struggles to make ends meet while fighting giant monsters, running over rooftops from crazed waiters, fending off businessmen-turned-samurai, or having the occasional conversation with Judge Judy, Coolio, or Alton Brown. With Fred Chao’s signature style and laugh-out-loud humor, Johnny Hiro presents the quirky trials and misadventures of a modern-day hero trying to find his slice of the good life.

This delightfully absurdist romp through the trials and chores of living in New York was nominated for four Eisner Awards, including for best new series, and for the Russ Manning Award. It was selected for the anthology Best American Comics 2010. Prepare to be blown away by the greatest adventure of them all: being an adult.

Description of The Skills to Pay the Bills:

After a couple of years as an underpaid sushi chef for his incredibly stingy and negative boss, Mr. Masago, Johnny Hiro doubts his abilities to provide his girlfriend Mayumi with the kind of life he thinks she deserves. Though their relationship is happy, he wonders if he can create something more stable for the long term: a partnership she can find a lasting happiness in.

Throw in the aftereffects of Johnny’s past relationships and Mr. Masago’s prior business ventures with his current rival Shinto Pete, and it’s all a big case study in how each decision influences the next and can create vast differences in the way life develops. Figuring all of this out is even harder in New York City, with its giant gorillas, sumo wrestlers, Japanese gangsters, and rogue catering companies.

And within this crazy day-to-day existence, Hiro must find a way to look beyond the fact that he can barely make rent…and figure out how to have faith in his future.

Starting Bid: $20.
