An uncorrected proof of Benjamin Parzybok’s Sept. 2014 novel Sherwood Nation

Item Name & Description: In drought-stricken Portland, Oregon, a Robin Hood-esque water thief is caught on camera redistributing an illegal truckload of water to those in need. Nicknamed Maid Marian—real name: Renee, a 20-something barista and eternal part-time college student—she is an instant folk hero. Renee rides her swelling popularity and the public’s disgust at how the city has abandoned its people, raises an army . . . and secedes a quarter of the city.

Even as Maid Marian and her compatriots build their community one neighbor at a time, they are making powerful enemies amongst the city government and the National Guard. Sherwood is an idealistic dream too soon caught in a brutal fight for survival.

Sherwood Nation is the story of the rise and fall of a micronation within a city. It is a love story, a war story, a grand social experiment, a treatise on hacking and remaking government, on freedom and necessity, on individualism and community.

And, it is not out until September!

Benjamin Parzybok is the author of the novel Couch and has been the creator/co-creator of many other projects, includingGumball Poetry, The Black Magic Insurance Agency (city-wide, one night alternate reality game), and Project Hamad. He lives in Portland with the artist Laura Moulton and their two kids.

[Admin edit: in comments, the author offers to send the winner “the winner a lovely postcard, probably with a drawing or two, that may be used as the book’s bookmark.”]

Signed copy of The Anatomy of Steampunk by Katherine Gleason

book coverItem Name & Description: a copy of The Anatomy of Steampunk by Katherine Gleason, with an introduction by Diana M. Pho and a Foreword by K.W. Jeter, signed by Katherine Gleason and Diana M. Pho and donated by Katherine Gleason (edited to correct donor).

Description:

From formal outfits to costumes crafted for the stage, from ensembles suited to adventure to casual street styles, steampunk fashion has come to encompass quite a few different looks. But what exactly is steampunk? Originally conceived as a literary genre, the term “steampunk” described stories set in a steam-powered, science fiction-infused, Victorian London. Today steampunk has grown to become an aesthetic that fuels many varied art forms. Steampunk has also widened its cultural scope. Many steampunk practitioners, rather than confining their vision to one European city, imagine steam-driven societies all over the world.

Today the vibrance of steampunk inspires a wide range of individuals, including designers of high fashion, home sewers, crafters, and ordinary folks who just want to have fun. Steampunk fashion is not only entertaining, dynamic, and irreverent; it can also be colorful, sexy, and provocative. Most of all, steampunk fashion is accessible to everyone. Illustrated throughout with color photographs of the dazzling creations of numerous steampunk fashion designers, Anatomy of Steampunk is an inspirational sourcebook. In addition to presenting the looks and stories of these creative fashion artists, the book also details ten steampunk projects for the reader to try at home. Allow steam to power your imagination!

Designers and steampunk groups featured in the book include–Airship Isabella, Ali Fateh, Berít New York, Black Garden, Blasphemina’s Closet, Brute Force Studios, Clockwork Couture. DASOWL, Dawnamatrix, The Extraordinary Contraptions, Festooned Butterfly, Harvash, Hi Tek by Alexander, House of Canney, KMKDesigns, Kristi Smart, Kristin Costa, KvO Design, Lastwear, The League of S.T.E.A.M., Marquis of Vaudeville, Megan Maude, Michael Salerno, Morrigan New York, Ms. Purdy’s, Muses Well, Redfield Design, RockLove, Sidharta Aryan, SkinzNhydez, Spyder Designs, Tokyo Inventors Society, Tom Banwell, and The Uprising of the Gin Rebellion.

Signed copies of Smoketown

book cover Item Name & Description: Two signed copies of Smoketown by Tenea D. Johnson

Starting Bid: $10

Notes: Book description from Amazon:

The city of Leiodare is unlike any other in the post-climate change United States. Within its boundaries, birds are outlawed and what was once a crater in Appalachia is now a tropical, glittering metropolis where Anna Armour is waiting. An artist by passion and a factory worker by trade, Anna is a woman of special gifts. She has chosen this beautiful, traumatized city to wait for the woman she’s lost, the one she believes can save her from her troubled past and uncertain future. When one night Anna creates life out of thin air and desperation, no one is prepared for what comes next-not Lucine, a smooth talking soothsayer with plans for the city; Lucine’s brother Eugenio who has designs of his own; Seife, a star performer in the Leiodaran cosmos; or Rory, a forefather of the city who’s lived through outbreak, heartbreak, and scandal. Told through their interlocking stories, Smoketown delves into the invisible connections that rival magic, and the cost of redemption.

Long story short: This book is gorgeously written and received the 2011 Parallax Award from Carl Brandon Society. You need this book. You WANT this book. It will haunt your dreams until it’s yours.

Signed, bound copy of script for Captain Marvel #17

Captain Marvel #17 cover artItem Name & Description: a bound copy of the script for Captain Marvel #17 (the Carol Corps issue), donated and signed by the author, Kelly Sue DeConnick.

Captain Marvel #17 is a special oversized issue that concludes Carol Danvers’ first series as Captain Marvel (the series returns in March 2014). It is written by Kelly Sue DeConnick and drawn by Filipe Andrade. There’s a really nice, though spoiler-filled, review at the AV Club that calls it “an issue that rewards Carol’s immense struggle with a story about a city’s debt to its protector and a writer’s gratitude to her loyal fans.” This auction item is for a bound copy of script of the issue, not the issue itself, signed by the author.

Starting Bid: $25.

Notes: Ships anywhere. Donated and shipped by the author, so personalization is available.
