The Lost Steersman, by Rosemary Kirstein, with small handmade blank journal

Item Name & Description: The Lost Steersman, Volume 3 of the Steerswoman Series, with accompanying handmade journal.

While I was writing The Lost Steersman I was also experimenting with paper-making and I recycled printed drafts of the book into handmade paper. I intentionally left fragments of text visible in the finished pages, as random decorative inclusions.

There are twenty pages to this little (4.5″ by 6″) book. The paper is rough, and works well with colored pencil, fountain pen, felt-tip pen (NOT ballpoint). I include two loose pages for you to experiment with.

Cover is marble paper, end-papers are bark paper. Silk ribbon tie closure, with gold-edged little snail shell.

Starting Bid: $15

Notes: I will ship anywhere in the world (however for destinations in the Southern Hemisphere I’ll use the least expensive shipping method, and it might take months for the item to reach you). Signing available on request.

Bidding is now open. It closes Sunday, May 3, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. (time zone conversions, countdown) unless bids are received in the last ten minutes (learn more).

The Steerswoman by Rosemary Kirstein, mass market paperback, including map on handmade paper

Item Name & Description: The Steerswoman, mass market paperback, including a map, printed on paper that I made by hand.

If you ask, she must answer. A steerswoman’s knowledge is shared with any who request it; no steerswoman may refuse a question, and no steerswoman may answer with anything but the truth. And if she asks, you must answer. It is the other side of tradition’s contract — and if you refuse the question, or lie, no steerswoman will ever again answer even your most casual question. And so, the steerswomen — always seeking, always investigating — have gathered more and more knowledge about the world they traveled, and they share that knowledge freely. Until the day that the steerswoman Rowan begins asking innocent questions about one small, lovely, inexplicable object… Her discoveries grow stranger and deeper, and more dangerous, until suddenly she finds she must flee or fight for her life. Or worse — lie. Because one kind of knowledge has always been denied the the steerswomen: Magic.

“If you haven’t read Kirstein’s Steerswoman books I envy you the chance to read them now for the first time…. I think they have a very good claim to be my favorite thing still being written.” — Jo Walton, Hugo and Nebula Awards winner, author of Among Others and Farthing.

Starting Bid: $10

One Night in Sixes – Rare Annotated Misprint Edition

Item Name & Description: This is an annotated, autographed, first-edition British copy of my debut novel, One Night in Sixes. This is a rare item never offered for sale: a misprinted page was discovered before the book’s release, causing the rest of this run to be pulped and subsequently re-issued. I’ve added the missing page manually, and annotated the book with my own notes about the writing, characters, research, etc.

One Night in Sixes is the first book in an epic fantasy Western series, recommended for fans of Cormac McCarthy, George R.R. Martin, and Joss Whedon’s Firefly. I’ll be glad to personalize the autograph for the winner. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. Happy bidding!

Manuscript Critique – Up to 10,000 Words

Item Name & Description: I’ll critique up to 10,000 words of your original fiction or narrative nonfiction. (Short stories welcome; no fanfiction, academic writing, or poetry.) You can choose one of three critique types:

1) Content edit: a holistic review of the story structure, plot, and pacing with recommended changes – a more thorough version of the edit letter you might get from an editor at a traditional publishing house. Example:

2) Line edit: a more detailed critique of lines and paragraphs, focusing less on the story and more on the telling. Emphasis on improving dialogue, streamlining the narrative, and punching up the prose. Example:

3) Copyedit: going through individual words and sentences with a fine-tooth comb. No substantial changes – just correcting grammar, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation, and flagging awkward, misused, or redundant words/phrases. Example:

Regardless of which critique you choose, I will be glad to customize my work: if there are any particular questions you have or story elements you’d like to receive special attention, just let me know. Most clients describe my style as thorough, insightful, and positive/constructive. Don’t choose me if you’re looking for a ruthless drill sergeant to pulverize your manuscript!

As for me: I’m a traditionally-published author and writing instructor with a master’s degree in English and several years of professional editing experience. I teach for the DFW Writers Conference, the Loft Literary Center, and this year am chairing the ApolloCon Writers Workshop in Houston. I’m also an active member of the DFW Writers Workshop, one of the oldest and largest critique groups in the southern US. My full bio is available online. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. Happy bidding!

-Tex

Starting Bid: $10

Notes: For line editing and copyedits, I generally use MS Word’s “Track Changes” feature, but am glad to work through any digital medium. Once I’ve received your manuscript, please allow two weeks for critique.
