SF/F Short Story Critique

Item Name & Description: Critique of a Science Fiction or Fantasy short story up to 9,000 words. I am one of the three fiction editors at Strange Horizons This critique is not an offer of publication in Strange Horizons, but if you’d like to talk about possible markets and whether your story is ready to be submitted, I’m happy to do that.

I’m willing to critique fanfic, but please check with me first regarding (a) fandom (my range here is limited) and (b) audience/subject material. I’m also not your best bet for horror; I squick really easily, so I am definitely not your target audience for stories with scenes of graphic torture, rape, or extreme violence. Other than that, I am very open to all subgenres of SF and Fantasy.

Starting Bid: $75.00

Notes: I’ll deliver your critique within 30 days of receiving your story. This offer is good for the duration of 2013, so feel free to bid even if you don’t have a story ready to send immediately.

Offer: Chocolate Truffles

Item Name & Description: 24 Chocolate Truffles

I’ve been making chocolate truffles for 3 or 4 years now, and I only make them in the cold Winter months when I can work in a room colder than 50*F. They’re pretty darn tasty.

They can be either vegan (in the past I’ve just used deliciously fatty coconut milk, but I’ve had success this year working with soy and almond milks as well) or not (made with local heavy cream from my farmers’ market).

There’s a ganache filling, which can have almost any flavor at all. Just some of the options include: tea (I have some interesting black teas, matcha, and a few herbal teas that I keep for company but aren’t to my taste); curry/masala; scotch & honey; galangal & lemongrass; cardamom & black pepper; habanero; laurel (bay leaves); sage; chai … – really, almost anything that’s not too wet can be a flavor.

And then there’s a hand-dipped coating of even more chocolate! I try to match how light or dark the coating is to the flavors in the ganache, but I can also take requests. Note: for the coatings, I lack the skill of adding vegan dairy alternatives, so any mixing with milk chocolate will necessarily not be vegan.

Starting Bid: $12

Notes: I will mail to anywhere in the northern hemisphere (I’ve successfully mailed truffles to Europe and the UK, but I’m willing to try anywhere).

My schedule is incredibly busy from February 22nd-26th, so I might be a few days late replying to the winning bid. On the positive side, that means I’ll have more free time than usual to make the truffles right away.

Warning: Last year’s truffle-making was a little dodgy with warm weather, and I had some mold problems. I didn’t hear anything from last year’s recipient, so I hope that didn’t affect them. But if you are not satisfied for any reason I will make you another batch even if I have to wait until the next cold season to do so.

Green Tea Yoda Oreos

Green Tea Yoda Oreos. Or YODEOS, as I like to call them. These are green tea sugar cookies with vanilla icing centers, following the recipe from justJENN.

Starting Bid: $20

Notes: My Hyper-Expensive William Sonoma Star Wars Cookie Cutters (TM) also come with several other characters. So if you’d prefer chocolate Darth Vaders or vanilla Stormtroopers, or a mix of all three with some Boba Fetts thrown in for fun, I’d be happy to alter the recipe accordingly.

Offer is two dozen cookies. Last year we successfully shipped them to an APO address in Germany.

No blue milk will be provided, due to shipping constraints.

Old-school Star Trek fiction

Twelve old Star Trek books: Once upon a time Bantam had the rights to publish Star Trek books, before Pocket came on the scene. They published a fair number of them. I won’t say that they were, collectively, worse than the early Pocket products, but some of them were certainly odd.

This auction lot contains twelve of these old books (ten from Bantam and two from Corgi in the UK, but who’s counting):

  • Planet of Judgment and World Without End by Joe Haldeman. Possibly not Haldeman’s best work.
  • Vulcan! and Death’s Angel by Kathleen Sky.
  • The Starless World and Devil World by Gordon Eklund.
  • The Galactic Whirlpool by David Gerrold.
  • Trek to Madworld by Stepen Goldin.
  • Mudd’s Angels by J. A. Lawrence.
  • Spock, Messiah! by Theodore R. Cogswell and Charles A. Spano, Jr. While I haven’t read most of these books in many years, I am going to go out on a limb and say that this is the worst one. See this highly-accurate review for details.
  • Both volumes of Star Trek: The New Voyages, edited by Sondra Marshak and Myrna Culbreath. Those who remember the editors’ Trek novels are probably cringing, but these anthologies are actually not bad. (They only wrote one of the stories.) The first volume has introductions to the stories written by TOS cast members, and the second has a story by Nichelle Nichols.

All of these are old paperbacks which have wear, and some have price stickers. None of them have water damage or foxing. A few had covers which adhered to each other over time, which is why they have little white torn spots all over them, but the covers are still structurally sound.

Starting Bid: $20

Notes: I will ship these for free in the US. I won’t mail them outside the US; recent price increases have made this really expensive. (If you are outside the US and just dying to have these for some reason, contact me and I will see what I can do.) The books will be shipped within a few days of my receipt of the donation notification.
