Critique by Melissa Ann Singer

(Posted on behalf of the donor—Kate.)

Item Name & Description: Critique of first chapter and synopsis by Melissa Ann Singer

I will review the first chapter—or, if you don’t have chapters, the first 25 pages or so (stop at a natural breakpoint, please)—and synopsis of your novel. Preferred genres are horror, urban fantasy, mystery/suspense, epic/adventure fantasy, or general women’s fiction. No romance or science fiction; no rape scenes.

I will line edit the text (if it needs line-editing) and provide editorial notes addressing issues of plot and character.

I am a Senior Editor at Tom Doherty Associates, LLC, publisher of Forge, Tor, Orb, Starscape, and Tor Teen. I’ve edited a number of New York Times and USA Today bestsellers; works I have edited have won the Bram Stoker Award, the RT Reviewers’ Choice Award, and the British Fantasy Award and been finalists for those and many other awards, including the World Fantasy Award.

Starting Bid: $25.

Notes: The winner should send a .doc or .rtf file by October 15, 2014 and should expect a response by email in about three months.

Bidding is now open; it closes Sunday, February 23, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. More Information.

Fiction critique (up to 10,000 words)

Starting Bid: $15

Notes: You can send the story at any time before April 1st, 2014, and I’ll promise to respond within three weeks. I prefer e-mail correspondence, rather than a print manuscript — if you’d like to have a Skype session about it, that could also be arranged.

Critique of your novel by Delia Sherman

(Posted on behalf of Delia. — Kate)

Item Name & Description: I will read your fantasy/insterstitial novel, adult, YA, or MG, and critique it with you on Skype. If your novel is longer than 60,000 words, I will probably not do comments on the manuscript (although, in practice, you can never tell. Sometimes I just can’t help myself.).

Starting Bid: $75.

Short Story Critique (up to 7500 words)

Item Name & Description: Critique of a short story of up to 7500 words.

Starting Bid: $20

Notes: To copy Yoon Ha Lee, I can read .doc or RTF files, and would rather work via email than physical manuscripts. I will provide the critique within 30 days of receipt of the manuscript. I’m best with SF and fantasy, and would probably not give a satisfying critique of your horror, romance, or erotica. I am a musician and a lifelong horse person, so I can be particularly useful with details related to those things.

My stories have been published in Strange Horizons, Asimov’s, and Daily Science Fiction, and I have stories forthcoming in Fantasy & Science Fiction, Lightspeed, and several anthologies. I’m a longtime member of the Baltimore Science Fiction Society’s public critique group.

Bidding will open Monday, February 10, 2014 at 12:01 a.m. Eastern (GMT -5); it closes Sunday, February 23, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. More Information.

Fiction critique (up to 10,000 words)

Item Name & Description: Critique of up to 10,000 words of story. This can either be a single shorter work, or the first chunk of a novel. In the latter case, please note that I am not a novelist and do not claim particular expertise in novels, but I’m willing if you are.

I’m best with sf/f. You may want to inquire first about other genres. For instance, I am unlikely to be any good to you if you’re writing conventional romance. (There’s nothing wrong with romance, but I don’t read or write it, so.)

If you have particular areas of concern, I’m happy to discuss those with you.

My short story collection Conservation of Shadows came out in 2013; I’ve had stories in Tor.com, The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, Clarkesworld Magazine, Lightspeed Magazine, and Beneath Ceaseless Skies. Examples of my work that you can read for free online: “Ghostweight” [Clarkesworld], “The Knight of Chains, the Deuce of Stars” [Lightspeed], “Effigy Nights” [Clarkesworld].

Starting Bid: $20.00

Notes: You’re welcome to cash in the critique at any point before April 1, 2014. I can read .doc or RTF files, and would rather work via email than physical manuscripts.

Edit: I’m also willing to discuss your story over Skype, assuming we can schedule a mutually agreeable time (I’m in Louisiana, so Central Time USAn) and you don’t mind talking to a disembodied voice (I don’t have a video camera).

Bidding will open Monday, February 10, 2014 at 12:01 a.m. Eastern (GMT -5); it closes Sunday, February 23, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. More Information.
