The traditional John M. Ford lot

Item Name & Description: John M. Ford was a brilliant writer whose works are unlikely to ever be reprinted, at least in the US. Here are some things by him:

  • The Dragon Waiting. This is my personal favorite of his novels. Here is an excellent review of it. Here is another one, by Jo Walton. If those don’t convince you to read it, I don’t know what will. This is a mass-market paperback with an unlovely cover, but then this book has had bad luck with covers. The book is in decent shape, with not too much spine creasing.
  • Liavek: Festival Week, which does not have any of Ford’s Liavek stories, but does have all of his Liavek poetry, which is well worth having (and was never printed elsewhere). And of course the book does contain fiction by excellent writers such as Jane Yolen, Steven Brust, Pamela Dean, etc.
  • Six old issues of Asimov’s containing stories and/or articles by Ford. Some of the stories were later printed elsewhere, but in one case (“Slowly By, Lorena,” one of the Alternities Inc. stories) “elsewhere” is an obscure Baen alt-hist anthology you probably don’t have. One of the stories has never been reprinted. Neither of the articles – a longish survey piece on currently-available role-playing games and “On Opening Night at the Universe,” about the debut of Carl Sagan’s Cosmos show – have ever been reprinted, either.

Notes: I will mail these for free in the US but won’t mail them elsewhere (international shipping has just gotten too expensive). I will mail them within a few days of receiving the donation notification.

Box o’ books #3

Item Name & Description: A smallish box of writing/crafts/random books, in decent to good condition (reader-grade):

  • Cross-Stitch for My Kitchen. NOTE: This is in Korean, but I’m an indifferent cross stitcher (not fluent in Korean) and the charts look pretty clear to me, and floss colors are given in both ANC (?) and DMC.
  • Another Korean domestic-ish cross stitch book in similar vein.
  • FutureMusic #249, Sampling special (magazine, DVD not included).
  • Mandolin Primer for Beginners by Bert Casey (includes CD, never opened so I have no idea if it still plays)
  • Ancient Warfare Vol. V, Issue 6 (lead article is on elite units of the Hellenistic era)
  • The Fiction Editor: A Book for Writers, Teachers, Publishers, Editors, and Anyone Else Devoted to Fiction by Thomas McCormack
  • The 4 A.M. Breakthrough: Unconventional Writing Exercises That Transform Your Fiction by Brian Kitely (so unconventional that most of the exercises fill me with a kind of OH HECK NO THAT’S PSYCHOTIC horror, and I’m someone who likes to write things that look impossible–but who knows? maybe this is exactly what you need; if nothing else, some of the exercises are also hilarious, like the one where you take one of your existing stories and ERASE 95% OF IT)

Starting Bid: $5

Notes: I will ship anywhere in the USA for free, but only in the USA. Book boxes are heavy and international shipping has gotten very expensive.

Bidding will open Monday, February 10, 2014 at 12:01 a.m. Eastern (GMT -5); it closes Sunday, February 23, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. More Information.

Box o’ books #2

Item Name & Description: An assorted box of books. Condition varies from okay to good; these are all used and reader-grade. Mostly focused on art/comics/music. And look at the starting price–you could get a lot of stuff for a low, low cost!

  • Game of Thrones comic #1
  • In Wonderland (Gundam Wing doujinshi, Heero/Duo, MATURE)
  • Suicide Squad vol. 1 (graphic novel trade paperback, this is the New 52 or something rather than the older Suicide Squad? I am not comics-savvy)
  • Project Blue Rose by Rachel Manija Brown and Stephanie Folse
  • How to Draw Fairies in Simple Steps by Paul Bryn Davies
  • Digital Artist #25 (magazine; includes CD, never played it, no clue if it still works)
  • Deleter Manga Techniques vol. 1: Drawing Manga for Beginners
  • Deleter Manga Techniques vol. 2: Drawing Manga for Advanced Learners
  • Deleter Manga Techniques vol. 7: Creating Characters for Games
  • Tex Avery: King of Cartoons by Joe Adamson
  • Kingdom of the Winds vol. 1 (manhwa)
  • Obama Paper Dolls (Dover Publications)
  • McCain Paper Dolls (Dover Publications)
  • Presidential Material: Barack Obama/John McCain (IDW comic twofer)
  • Logic Pro 8 by Mark Cousins & Russ Hepworth-Sawyer
  • The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Arranging and Orchestration by Michael Miller (includes audio CD, although the audio tracks use Garritan Personal Orchestra, whose sound quality I personally find questionable; you are much better off going to Youtube and listening to clips to familiarize yourself with timbres/instruments/ranges IMO)

Starting Bid: $5

Notes: Shipping is on me within the USA, but I will only ship within the USA. Book boxes are heavy and international shipping has gotten very expensive.
