A bit (or more than a bit) of sf/f, just for you!

Item Name & Description: I will write sf/f to a brief, mutually-agreed-upon prompt for you. I will do my best to accommodate any reasonable prompt, but there are some things that I can’t learn how to do fast enough; for example, strongly historical sf/f is probably out, ditto non-parodic romance. I have to warn you that I write the worst sex scenes ever, in case you were going to go there. But origami spaceships? Metaphysical guns? Anime in-jokes? No problem.

If you like, I can elaborate upon the setting or characters of one of my existing pieces of original fiction (see my website for a list), including the StoryNexus game Winterstrike (but note that I am offering static fiction, NOT a game add-on).

Your fiction will be at least 500 words long.
If bidding goes over $50, it will be at least 1,000 words long.
If bidding goes over $100, it will be at least 2,000 words long.
I will endeavor to be done by the end of March.

In the event that bidding goes over $250, it will be at least 4,000 words long. In this case, I will endeavor to be done by the end of August.

I reserve the right to seek publication for the finished work, but you will see the final draft first. (Heck, if you really want, you’ll see the actual rough draft, before I go back in to fix things. I promise my rough drafts are frequently hilariously bad, for extra entertainment.) Furthermore, 50% of the proceeds from the piece’s first sale, if it happens, will be donated to Con or Bust.

I can attempt to include a dedication to you if you want it, but not all publications will print dedications. (My observation so far is that reprint anthologies never include them.) I will, however, list a dedication on my website listing for the piece in that case (again, if you want; if you don’t want, that’s fine too).

As an example, my story “Ghostweight” [Clarkesworld], which was a finalist for the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award in 2012 and was reprinted in The Year’s Best Science Fiction 29, ed. Gardner Dozois, and The Year’s Best Science Fiction and Fantasy 2012, ed. Rich Horton, was written to charibdys’s prompt “origami and consequences.” I have also written a number of pieces of flash fiction to request.

Starting Bid: $15

Notes: See above.

Bidding is now open; it closes Sunday, February 23, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. More Information.

Signed copy of Conservation of Shadows

Item Name & Description: One signed copy of my sf/f short story collection Conservation of Shadows. You can find the table of contents at my website.

Starred review at Publishers Weekly:
Lee’s short fiction has been lauded by respected anthologists and discerning readers; this fine collection of 16 stories (one original) gives Lee’s work the chance to reach the wider audience it deserves. Of particular interest are “Ghostweight,” whose protagonist’s desire for revenge brings terrible results, and the thematically related “Effigy Nights.” These provide an interesting contrast to the moral dilemma faced by the heroine of “Swanwatch,” whose masters have placed her in a cruel game. As the author’s notes make clear, Lee draws on a wide range of inspirations, using other genre fiction and Korean history as a seeds around which to crystalize stories. Lee’s stories are often dark and tragic, and always worth the reader’s time.

Starting Bid: $10

Notes: Shipping is on me to anywhere reasonable (most nations okay, Mars not so much).

Bidding will open Monday, February 10, 2014 at 12:01 a.m. Eastern (GMT -5); it closes Sunday, February 23, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. More Information.

Fiction critique (up to 10,000 words)

Item Name & Description: Critique of up to 10,000 words of story. This can either be a single shorter work, or the first chunk of a novel. In the latter case, please note that I am not a novelist and do not claim particular expertise in novels, but I’m willing if you are.

I’m best with sf/f. You may want to inquire first about other genres. For instance, I am unlikely to be any good to you if you’re writing conventional romance. (There’s nothing wrong with romance, but I don’t read or write it, so.)

If you have particular areas of concern, I’m happy to discuss those with you.

My short story collection Conservation of Shadows came out in 2013; I’ve had stories in Tor.com, The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, Clarkesworld Magazine, Lightspeed Magazine, and Beneath Ceaseless Skies. Examples of my work that you can read for free online: “Ghostweight” [Clarkesworld], “The Knight of Chains, the Deuce of Stars” [Lightspeed], “Effigy Nights” [Clarkesworld].

Starting Bid: $20.00

Notes: You’re welcome to cash in the critique at any point before April 1, 2014. I can read .doc or RTF files, and would rather work via email than physical manuscripts.

Edit: I’m also willing to discuss your story over Skype, assuming we can schedule a mutually agreeable time (I’m in Louisiana, so Central Time USAn) and you don’t mind talking to a disembodied voice (I don’t have a video camera).

Bidding will open Monday, February 10, 2014 at 12:01 a.m. Eastern (GMT -5); it closes Sunday, February 23, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. More Information.
