Announcements: Auction Dates; Easier to Request Assistance; Memberships Now Available

I have three exciting announcements today: the auction is coming soon; it’s now easier to request assistance; and specific assistance is available for many upcoming cons, including memberships available right now!

Auction Dates

Mark your calendars: Con or Bust’s annual online auction will start Monday, February 10, 2014 at 12:01 a.m. Eastern (GMT -5) and end Sunday, February 23, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern. (I’m changing the end time from the usual midnight to make it easier for people in a wider range of time zones to make last-minute bids.) Start thinking about what you might like to auction or to see auctioned; I will update the auction information page soon with this year’s procedures.

Requesting Assistance

Con or Bust takes requests from fans of color/non-white fans to attend SFF cons four times a year. Starting next request period (February 15-25, 2014), fans may request assistance to attend any forthcoming SFF con, not just ones in the quarter following the request period. This should give people greater flexibility in making their con-going plans. More details are on the Request Assistance page.

Memberships Available Now and Other Upcoming Cons

After the jump are all the many upcoming cons for which specific assistance is available, in chronological order (this list is also now available on the new Upcoming Cons page for easy reference, as well as in calendar form). This includes several cons for which memberships are immediately available, and major assistance to Worldcon and World Fantasy Con, so please check it out!

Free WisCon membership; FOGcon roommate sought

Con or Bust, which helps fans of color/non-white fans attend SFF cons, has the following assistance available:

First, a female fan of color is looking for 1-3 female non-smoking roommates at FOGcon (March 7-9, 2014, Walnut Creek, CA, USA). Please email knepveu@steelypips.org if you’re interested.

(Reminder: a donated membership to FOGcon is also available currently; see the Upcoming Cons page for more information, and for all the many cons for which assistance is or will be available.)

Second, an individual has donated a membership to WisCon, May 23-26, 2014, Madison, WI, USA. WisCon is the world’s leading feminist science fiction convention. Its Guests of Honor are Hiromi Goto and N.K. Jemisin. This membership will be available through during the next assistance request period, February 15-25, 2014; see the Request Assistance page for more information.

Reminder: Feb. 15-25, request assistance to attend SFF cons

From February 15-25, Con or Bust will take requests for assistance from fans of color/non-white fans to attend all upcoming SFF cons. A list of cons for which specific assistance has been donated can be found at the Upcoming Cons page.

In addition, memberships to Potlatch, FOGcon, JOFcon, and JordanCon 6 are available immediately; see the Upcoming Cons page for more detail.

Seven Clean Dragons

Item Name & Description: Seven Clean Dragons

These are homemade soap of my personal recipe including olive
oil, palm oil, palm kernel oil, shea butter, and castor oil. They are colored with mineral pigments except for the blue which an organic dye and scented with essential oils or fragrance blends.

  • The white dragon is my personal recipe with no added colors or scents.
  • The red dragon is peppermint.
  • The orange dragon is grapefruit.
  • The yellow dragon is honeysuckle.
  • The green dragon is green clover and aloe.
  • The blue dragon is ocean rain.
  • The purple dragon is lavender.

I have three dragons of each scent. Soaps like these generally go for about $5 each. While I make plenty of soap, dragons are rarer. I think the last time I made dragons before these was before the last Con Or Bust, and these are all I have right now.

The two top bidders will win. Each will get one of each dragon. The other seven dragons will be divided between them. Each will rank all seven dragons in order of preference. The top winner will get an extra of his/her first ranked dragon. The second winner will get his first ranked or second if is taken. The top winner will then get his second or third and so on until all seven extras are distributed. The first winner will at worst get extras of the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th choice and the second winner will at worst get the 2nd, 4th, and 6th choice.

Starting Bid: $10.

Notes:

These are ready to ship as soon as the auction is over. USPS priority mail shipping in the U.S. will be included. Due to expensive shipping (likely around $60), customs, and possible long shipping time, I’m sorry, but I discourage international bids.

If the winners want to order more soap (bars, not dragons), plenty more will fit in the box since a medium flat rate is the cheapest option and no extra shipping will be required. No doubt, ten or eleven bars will be plenty though.

You can find more information on my soap at www.karlsoap.info

Best of luck, Karl

Want to Offer Something in Con or Bust’s Auction?

Want to help Con or Bust assist fans of color/non-white fans to attend SFF cons? One major way is to offer something in Con or Bust’s annual online auction, which is its main source of funds.

Bidding on this year’s auction starts Monday, February 10, 2014, but you can offer things for auction starting now! Some things people have offered in the past are books, character naming rights, delicious homemade food, editing services, care packages from their hometown, jewelry, and knitted goods, but you’re encourage to offer any good or service that you think someone might enjoy (and that is legal, practical, and morally and ethically appropriate).

You can learn more about submitting items for auction, or go straight to the submit an auction page: all you need is an email address. And if you’re not in a position to offer something, it would also be incredibly helpful if you’d spread the word!

(Thanks again to Philip Weiss for extensively modifying this guest post plugin to create the custom auction-submission plugin.)
