Announcements: Auction Dates; Easier to Request Assistance; Memberships Now Available

I have three exciting announcements today: the auction is coming soon; it’s now easier to request assistance; and specific assistance is available for many upcoming cons, including memberships available right now!

Auction Dates

Mark your calendars: Con or Bust’s annual online auction will start Monday, February 10, 2014 at 12:01 a.m. Eastern (GMT -5) and end Sunday, February 23, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern. (I’m changing the end time from the usual midnight to make it easier for people in a wider range of time zones to make last-minute bids.) Start thinking about what you might like to auction or to see auctioned; I will update the auction information page soon with this year’s procedures.

Requesting Assistance

Con or Bust takes requests from fans of color/non-white fans to attend SFF cons four times a year. Starting next request period (February 15-25, 2014), fans may request assistance to attend any forthcoming SFF con, not just ones in the quarter following the request period. This should give people greater flexibility in making their con-going plans. More details are on the Request Assistance page.

Memberships Available Now and Other Upcoming Cons

After the jump are all the many upcoming cons for which specific assistance is available, in chronological order (this list is also now available on the new Upcoming Cons page for easy reference, as well as in calendar form). This includes several cons for which memberships are immediately available, and major assistance to Worldcon and World Fantasy Con, so please check it out!

All descriptions are from the cons’ websites.

  • Potlatch, February 21-23, 2014, San Jose, California. Potlatch is a small, literary speculative fiction convention with a single track of programming. Its Book of Honor, chosen by vote of the members, will be announced soon.

An individual has donated two memberships to Potlatch; another individual has donated two tickets to the Sunday morning banquet. NOTE: this con will happen before the next assistance period, so the memberships will be allocated starting immediately, first-come first-serve, through the memberships-only process listed on the Request Assistance page.

  • FOGcon, March 7-9, 2014, Walnut Creek, CA, USA. FOGCon is a literary-themed San Francisco Bay Area SF/F con in the tradition of Wiscon. The Honored Guests are Seanan McGuire, Tim Powers, and James Tiptree, Jr. The 2014 theme will be secrets.

One membership remains of those that FOGcon has donated to Con or Bust.
