Personal Training Session – For Writers

Form 4 Entry 141 Fileupload 1Item Name and Description: Or maybe it’s book therapy? Story coaching? Whatever you want to call it, that’s what I’m offering. I’ll read up to 20,000 words of your original work – any combination of pages, outline, synopsis, query, whatever you have – and then we’ll talk about it. Phone, Skype, email, whatever you want to do – up to 2 hours. We can perfect your submissions package for an agent, work through a plot problem, clean up your first chapter – you know what you need better than I do! And I’d like to help you get there.

As for me, I’m a ‘rural fantasy’ author, writing instructor, and comma placement specialist. I’m the author of the Children of the Drought series – represented by Jennie Goloboy of Red Sofa Literary and published in the US and UK by Solaris. I teach for the Writers Path at SMU in Dallas, and make my living as an editor and professional speaker. I have a master’s in English from the University of Dallas, and am just devastatingly cool and personable and hilarious. Just ask my mom. Or failing that, my schedule.

So there you have it: I’m cool, you’re cool, and together we’ll be AMAZING. Hit me up, and I’ll help you out!

Starting Bid: $25

Shipping: no shipping

Other Notes: Will be happy to correspond as soon as the auction ends, and available to start work on June 15th or anytime afterwards. (This offer will not expire until I do.) Photo is an example of my own notes – I promise not to make you read my handwriting.

SF or Fantasy Novel Critique from Yoon Ha Lee

Item Name & Description:

I will critique a science fiction or fantasy novel manuscript of up to 150,000 words. This is a general critique rather than line editing (although I am likely to mark things I catch as I go, unless you tell me you don’t want me to). I strongly prefer to read a complete work rather than the beginning chunk of a longer one.

My story “Effigy Nights” was a World Fantasy finalist for Best Short Story in 2014. My works have appeared in Tor.com, The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, Clarkesworld, Lightspeed, and Beneath Ceaseless Skies, among other venues; my collection CONSERVATION OF SHADOWS came out from Prime Books in 2013, and my space opera novel NINEFOX GAMBIT is forthcoming from Solaris Books this June.

Starting Bid: $200.

Other Notes?

I need the manuscript within 30 days of the end of the auction (in other words, you should plan to have a complete manuscript ready). I will return the critique within 60 days of receiving the novel. I can read RTF or .doc files. I’m happy to send comments through Word’s Track Changes or in a separate email; we can also schedule a one-hour chat about your manuscript over Skype if you’d like. Time-zone-wise I’m in Louisiana, USA, CST, but my schedule is somewhat flexible.

Bidding opens on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at 12:01 a.m. Eastern (time zone conversions). It will close on Sunday, June 5, 2016 at 4:00 p.m. (time zone conversions, countdown) unless bids are received in the last ten minutes (learn more).

Story / Poem Critique by Bogi Takács

Item Name & Description: I critique your story or poem! Any genre is welcome, maximum length: 7500 words.

I write science fiction, fantasy and uncategorizable oddities. My work has been published in venues like Clarkesworld, Lightspeed, Strange Horizons and Apex.

In addition to general writing-related comments, I can also offer my opinion on topics in my area of expertise and/or I can be your sensitivity reader. I am a psycholinguist by trade and I have also worked as a science and technology journalist in the past. I am a Hungarian Jewish trans person currently living in the US. I have been reviewing and recommending SFF stories and poetry in English since 2010, usually with a focus on marginalized groups and diversity. If your story needs a sensitivity read from someone besides me too, I will tell you about that and refer you to an additional reader, usually a specific person.

I have no topic or genre limitations! I read anything from literary fiction to near-future hard SF to epic fantasy to body horror. I prefer to be notified in advance about violence and sexual content, but that does not mean it is off-limits. A lot of science is fine. Absolutely no science is also fine.

Starting Bid: $50

Other Notes? I am a curmudgeonly curmudgeon and also tend to do line edits while reading for critique. If you don’t want line edits, only general commentary, tell me in advance!

Format: most electronic formats are fine. Preference for OpenDocument (.odt) or Word .doc. LaTeX is also fine :)

I will probably be able to send you my comments within a month, and be in touch if there are any delays.
