“Lost Steersman” handmade journal by Rosemary Kirstein

Form 4 Entry 132 Fileupload 1Item Name and Description: The paper inside this blank journal is handmade by me, from recycled printouts of the original manuscript for The Lost Steersman. There are random words from the book visible embedded within the paper, as decorative inclusions. The paper has a rough surface and deckle edge.

The journal measures 6.5 x 4.75 inches (16.51 x 12.06cm) and has a marble-paper cover, bark-paper end papers, and an old silk ribbon tie-closure with a gold-trimmed snail shell charm.

The paper does not work well with ball-point pen, but is good with ink, felt-tip, and colored pencils. I provide one loose sheet, so you can test your media.

Also included: a copy of the paperback version of The Lost Steersman.

Starting Bid: $20

Form 4 Entry 132 Fileupload 2Shipping: I will ship anywhere in the world.

The Steerswoman by Rosemary Kirstein, mass market paperback, including map on handmade paper

Item Name & Description: The Steerswoman, mass market paperback, including a map, printed on paper that I made by hand.

If you ask, she must answer. A steerswoman’s knowledge is shared with any who request it; no steerswoman may refuse a question, and no steerswoman may answer with anything but the truth. And if she asks, you must answer. It is the other side of tradition’s contract — and if you refuse the question, or lie, no steerswoman will ever again answer even your most casual question. And so, the steerswomen — always seeking, always investigating — have gathered more and more knowledge about the world they traveled, and they share that knowledge freely. Until the day that the steerswoman Rowan begins asking innocent questions about one small, lovely, inexplicable object… Her discoveries grow stranger and deeper, and more dangerous, until suddenly she finds she must flee or fight for her life. Or worse — lie. Because one kind of knowledge has always been denied the the steerswomen: Magic.

“If you haven’t read Kirstein’s Steerswoman books I envy you the chance to read them now for the first time…. I think they have a very good claim to be my favorite thing still being written.” — Jo Walton, Hugo and Nebula Awards winner, author of Among Others and Farthing.

The Wood-Gnome Book

Item Name & Description: This is an original hand-bound blank book, one of a kind. The design is inspired by characters and events in the Steerswoman Series.

wgb1

The interior paper is handmade by me, from recycled materials.

wgb2

Although I treated the paper surface for writing and drawing, it’s very rough-textured and quirky. Works well with fountain pen and illustration pens, if you don’t mind a bumpy ride. Colored pencil uses the texture to good advantage. I have not tested for watercolor.

wgb3

I include extra loose scraps of the same paper, for you to test your inks, pens, watercolors or pencils.

The cover is textured art paper, trimmed with frayed silk ribbon and carved wooden beads. Endpapers are papyrus.

wgb5

Book size is 4.5 inches x 6 inches (11.43 cm x 15.24 cm)

I include with this book: a sheet of the same handmade paper, printed with a brief tale explaining why this is called the Wood-Gnome Book; and a copy of the British edition of The Steerswoman, in which we first meet the wood-gnomes.

wgb7

Starting bid: $25

Note: I will ship anywhere in the world. North America gets Priority Mail; other international will be via first class mail, which will take somewhat longer.
