StokerCon, March 1st through March 4th, 2018, Providence, RI, USA (@StokerCon). StokerCon is the annual convention of The Horror Writers Association (HWA), the premier organization of writers and publishers of horror and dark fantasy. Its Guests of Honor are Ramsey Campbell, Craig Engler, Caitlín R. Kiernan, Victor LaValle, Elizabeth Massie, Sam Weller, and Jeff Strand.

StokerCon has donated six memberships, to be claimed by February 20, 2018.


Norwescon, March 29–April 1, 2018, SeaTac, WA, USA (@norwescon). Norwescon is the Pacific Northwest’s Premier Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention and one of the largest regional Science Fiction and Fantasy conventions in the United States. While maintaining a primarily literary focus, Norwescon is large enough to provide a venue for many of the other aspects of Science Fiction and Fantasy and the interests of its fans such as anime, costuming, art, gaming, and much, much more. Its Guests of Honor are Ken Liu (Writer), Galen Dara (Artist), Mathew Wedel (Science), and Green Ronin Publishing (Spotlight Publisher).

Norwescon has donated four memberships, to be claimed by March 1, 2018.


Swancon, 29 March 2018 to 2 April 2018, Perth, Western Australia, Australia (@swancon). Swancon is the Australian Natcon in 2018. Its Guests of Honour are Kameron Hurley, Ryan J Griffen, Emily Smith and Wolf Bylsma.

Swancon has donated the following, to be claimed by the start of the con (29 March): 5 full memberships; 5 Friday memberships; 5 Saturday memberships; and 5 Sunday memberships.

Funds to attend SFWA Nebula Conference, memberships to Scintillation & Beach City Con

Fans of color/non-white fans, the following new assistance can be requested during February 1-10, 2018:

The 2018 SFWA Nebula Conference, May 17-20, 2018, Pittsburgh, PA, USA (@sfwa). The SFWA Nebula Conference focuses on three tracks relevant to professionals in the genre and allows attendees to choose from career management, professional development, and expert knowledge panels and workshops throughout the weekend, and includes the Nebula Awards ceremony and banquet. You do not have to be a SFWA member to attend.

The SFWA Givers Fund has awarded $4,000 to Con or Bust to enable people of color/non-white people attend SFWA Nebula Conferences.


Scintillation, October 5-7, 2018, Montréal, Quebec, Canada. Scintillation is a small literary focused SF convention with program by Jo Walton; details at its Kickstarter page.

Scintillation has donated three memberships and $100 to Con or Bust.


Beach City Con, October 12 – 14, 2018, Virginia Beach, VA, USA (@beachcitycon). Beach City Con is a Steven Universe fan convention.

Beach City Con has donated four weekend passes, to be claimed by September 14, 2018.

Arisia, January 12-15, 2018, Boston, MA, USA (@arisia). Arisia is New England’s largest, most diverse sci-fi & fantasy convention. Its Featured Guests are: V. E. Schwab, Author Guest of Honor; Ashe Samuels, Artist Guest of Honor; Shannon Watters, Comics Industry Guest of Honor; Mikki Kendall, Fan Guest of Honor.

Arisia has donated ten memberships and two hotel rooms (three nights each; can be doubles if have, or willing to have, roommate also receiving Con or Bust assistance). One of the hotel rooms has been claimed. In addition, the Boston Speculative Fiction Writing Group (B-Spec) has donated one membership.


ConFusion, January 19-21, 2018, Detroit, MI, USA. ConFusion is the longest-running fan-run sf/f convention in Michigan and a premier event for publishing professionals and fans alike.

Apex Magazine has donated a membership to ConFusion.


Boskone, February 16-18, 2018, Boston, MA, USA (@boskonenews). Boskone is the longest-running science fiction & fantasy convention in New England. Its Guest of Honor is Mary Robinette Kowal; Special Guest: Craig Miller; Official Artist: Marianne Plumridge; Young Adult Fiction Guest: Tamora Pierce; Hal Clement Science Speaker: Catherine Asaro; and NESFA Press Guest: Nat Segaloff.

Boskone has donated two memberships, to be claimed by January 16, 2018. In addition, the Boston Speculative Fiction Writing Group (B-Spec) has donated one.


WhimsyCon, March 2 – 4, 2018, Denver, CO, USA (@shinygardengeek). WhimsyCon is Denver’s Steampunk and Costuming Convention. Its Author Guest of Honor is Milton Davis and its Costuming Guest of Honor is Kitty Krell.

WhimsyCon has donated twenty passes to Con or Bust, to be claimed by the start of the convention.


Starburst Media City Festival, 16th – 18th March 2018, Greater Manchester, England, UK (@starburstff). The Starburst Media City Festival is a multi-media Festival in the heart of Greater Manchester’s media zone, featuring literary programming, script-editing and adaptation workshops, and film screenings.

The Starburst Media City Festival has donated four tickets, to be claimed by 18th February.


Follycon, 30 March – 2 April 2018, Harrogate, England, UK (@Follycon2018). Follycon is the 69th British National Science Fiction Convention, or Eastercon. Its Guests of Honour are Kieron Gillen, Christina Lake, Nnedi Okorafor and Kim Stanley Robinson.

Follycon has donated five attending memberships to Con or Bust, to be claimed by March 1, 2018. Two have been claimed.


Ice & Fire Con, April 27-28, 2018, Mt Sterling, OH, USA. Ice & Fire Con is a convention themed around George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series and HBO’s Game of Thrones.

Ice & Fire Con has donated two memberships to Con or Bust, to be claimed by April 20, 2018. Note that attendees must be 18 years or older.


Penguicon, May 4-6, 2018, Southfield, MI, USA (@Penguicon). Penguicon is a non-profit, community-run convention for open source software and hardware, science fiction, gaming, DIY, and more!

An individual has donated two memberships, to be claimed by April 1, 2018.


WisCon, May 25-28, 2018, Madison, WI, USA. WisCon is a 1,000-member science fiction convention with a feminist/social justice focus. Its Guests of Honor are Saladin Ahmed and Tananarive Due.

available immediately: 4 Smofcon memberships + hotel room

Fans of color/non-white fans: the following free memberships are available now, first-come first-served:

Smofcon 35, December 1-3, 2017, Boston, MA, USA. Smofcon is a weekend of panels and workshops on conference planning; this year’s theme is Lessons Learned, identifying conventions issues and implementing solutions. The primary aims of the workshop are to increase convention leadership capabilities within the community, to provide a safe space where difficult questions can be honestly discussed, and to help convention chairs build connections with their peers.

Smofcon has donated four memberships to Con or Bust, and would like to hear from people ASAP so that recipients can participate in panels. In addition, Arisia has donated one hotel room (two double beds) to Con or Bust; the hotel room should be requested during the next request-assistance period, which is November 1st-10th, 2017 (if it is not claimed during that time, it will be put up for first-come first-serve, as it must be claimed by Friday, November 24, 2017).
