Fans of color/non-white fans: Con or Bust has the following new memberships available, first-come first-serve:

Ice & Fire Con, April 28-30, 2017, Pembroke, VA, USA. Ice & Fire Con is a convention themed around George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series and HBO’s Game of Thrones.

Ice & Fire Con has donated two memberships to Con or Bust, to be claimed by April 20, 2017. Note that attendees must be 18 years or older.


Beach City Con, October 13-15, 2017, Virginia Beach, VA, USA. The first Steven Universe convention is a fan-run non-profit event that will offer traditional convention programming with a Crystal Gem twist.

Beach City Con has donated two tickets to Con or Bust, to be claimed by October 6, 2018.


And for planning-ahead purposes, the following memberships will be available during May 15-25, 2017, when fans of color can next request monetary assistance to cons as well as memberships:

Fans of color/non-white fans: the following con has donated new free memberships, available first-come-first-serve:

Nine Worlds, 4-6 August 2017, London, England, UK. Nine Worlds is a geekfest, or a multi media, multi-genre residential pop culture convention.

Nine Worlds has donated twenty tickets to Con or Bust. Anyone who requests a membership by the end of Thursday, April 6 will be emailed the booking link for the convention hotel that Saturday (more information).

Please note: money to pay for the convention hotel can be requested only during May 15-25. Requesting a membership now just gets you on the list for the booking link.

Westercon is the most prestigious regional science fiction and fantasy convention on the west coast; Westercon 70 is also Leprecon 43 (an annual Arizona con). Its Guests of Honor are Julie Dillon, Tom Deadstuff, Larry Elmore, Connie Willis, Gini Koch, Tim Griffin, and Weston Ochse.

Westercon 70 has donated two memberships to Con or Bust, to be claimed by June 15, 2017.

  • Worldcon 75, 9-13 August, 2017, Helsinki, Finland. Worldcon 75 is the annual World Science Fiction Convention for 2017. Its Guests of Honor are John-Henri Holmberg, Nalo Hopkinson, Johanna Sinisalo, Claire Wendling, and Walter Jon Williams.

    Two memberships donated by individuals are available; note that one is a first Worldcon membership. (Previously: Worldcon 75 donated 25 attending memberships and 25 hotel room nights, all of which have been claimed; and two other memberships donated by individuals were claimed.)

Fans of color/non-white fans, I’m pleased to announce the following new memberships to upcoming cons:

  • TGIF/F, April 7-9, 2017, Los Angeles, CA, USA. TGIF/F is a multi-fandom femslash convention designed to bring together various fan communities to build connections, encourage discussion, and create art; its programming includes panels on SFF genre works, fantasy, video games, and more topics of SFF interest.

    TGIF/F has donated five passes to Con or Bust, which are available now, first-come first-serve.

  • OryCon, November 17-19, 2017, Portland, OR, USA. OryCon is Oregon’s premier, fan run, annual science fiction/fantasy convention held in Portland since 1979. Its Guests of Honor are Timothy Zahn; Briana Lawrence (Brichibi Cosplays) and Jessica Walsh (Snow Tigra); David Boop; and Sarah Clemens.

    OryCon has donated ten memberships to Con or Bust, to be claimed by October 31, 2017. These can be requested during February 15-25, 2017 (the upcoming request-assistance period).

Fans of color/non-white fans: the following free memberships to SFF conventions are available now, first-come first-serve:

  • Farpoint, February 17-19, 2017, Baltimore, MD, USA. Farpoint is an annual gathering for fans of all genres of imaginative fiction – Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror, SuperHeroes – in all the media formats in which they might appear. Its celebrity guests are Sam Witwer from the Star Wars universe and Once Upon A Time, Enver Gjokaj from Marvel’s Agent Carter and Star Trek legend/Oscar-nominated director Nicholas Meyer.

    Farpoint has donated four weekend membership tickets to Con or Bust, to be claimed by February 5, 2017. Attendees should note that their ticket INCLUDES one signature from the celebrity of their choice on Saturday and one on Sunday at no additional charge on an item they bring to the convention to be signed.

  • Kitacon Quest, 18th to 20th August 2017, Coventry, UK. Kitacon is the UK’s largest residential, non-profit, anime and geek culture convention celebrating popular fandoms, Japanese culture and geekery.

    Kitacon has donated two standard tickets to Con or Bust, to be claimed by July 15, 2017.

The following memberships are not new, but are also still available:

  • Capricon, February 16-19, 2017, Wheeling, IL, USA. Capricon’s Author Guest of Honor is Beth Revis; Artist Guest of Honor is Nilah Magruder; and Fan Guest of Honor is Meg Frank.

    Capricon has donated two memberships to Con or Bust, one of which has been claimed, and individuals have donated four memberships; all should be claimed by January 15, 2017.

  • MidSouthCon, March 24–26, 2017, Memphis, TN, USA. MidSouthCon is the longest-running annual ran-run multi-genre Science Fiction Convention in the Mid-South. Its GoHs are: Author GoH – Jack Campbell; Comics GoH – Tom DeFalco; Science GoH – Les Johnson; Artist GoH – Matt Stawicki; Gaming GoH – Keith Baker; Editor GoH – Allan Gilbreath; Toastmaster – Michael Bielaczyc; and Toastmaster – Paul Bielaczyc.

    An individual has donated one membership to MidSouthCon, which must be claimed by January 31, 2017.

  • Boskone, February 17-19, 2017, Boston, MA, USA. Boskone is an annual science fiction convention, the oldest in New England. Its 2017 Guests are: Guest of Honor: Brandon Sanderson; Official Artist: Dave Seeley; Special Guest: Maryelizabeth Yturralde; Featured Filkers: The Fabulous Lorraine & Lojo Russo; Hal Clement Science Speaker: Milton Davis; and NESFA Press Guest: Ken MacLeod.

    Boskone has donated two memberships to Con or Bust, which should be claimed by January 31, 2017.

  • HELIOsphere, March 10-12, 2017, Tarrytown, NY, USA. HELIOsphere is a new science fiction and fantasy convention. Its Guests of Honor are Jacqueline Carey, David Gerrold, and Danielle Ackley-McPhail, with Special Guest Charles Gannon.

    HELIOsphere has donated two memberships to Con or Bust, to be claimed by February 21, 2017.

  • Norwescon, April 13–16, 2017, Seattle, WA, USA. Norwescon is the Pacific Northwest’s premier science fiction and fantasy convention and one of the largest regional science fiction and fantasy conventions in the United States. Its Guests of Honor are Cory & Catska Ench (Artists), Ethan Siegel (Science), Nancy Kress (Toastmaster), and Angry Robot Books (Spotlight Publisher).

    Norwescon has donated two memberships to Con or Bust, which must be claimed by April 1, 2017.

  • StokerCon, April 27-30, 2017, Long Beach, CA, USA. StokerCon is the annual convention of The Horror Writers Association (HWA), the premier organization of writers and publishers of horror and dark fantasy. This will be its second annual convention and will be held aboard the legendary (and haunted) Queen Mary in Long Beach, California. The Bram Stoker Awards (R) Banquet takes place on the evening of Saturday, April 29th. Guests of Honor include George R.R. Martin, Elizabeth Hand, Chuck Wendig, Peter Crowther, Bill Bridges, Tananarive Due, Gretchen McNeil, Becky Spratford, Stephen Graham Jones and Toastmaster Nancy Holder.

    StokerCon has donated six memberships to Con or Bust, which should be claimed by March 15, 2017; one has been claimed.

  • LexiCon, 2-4 June 2017, Taupō, New Zealand. LexiCon is the 38th New Zealand National Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention. Its Guest of Honour is Seanan McGuire (aka Mira Grant); its Fan Guest of Honour is John Toon; and its Ghost of Honour is Orville, a rat in the Hobbit films.

    LexiCon has donated two memberships to Con or Bust, to be claimed by May 25, 2017.

  • Worldcon 75, 9-13 August, 2017, Helsinki, Finland. Worldcon 75 is the annual World Science Fiction Convention for 2017. Its Guests of Honor are John-Henri Holmberg, Nalo Hopkinson, Johanna Sinisalo, Claire Wendling, and Walter Jon Williams.
