  • The Institute of American Indian Arts’ (IAIA) Low Residency MFA in Creative Writing is offering the first annual Sherman Alexie Scholarship to a student who applies and enrolls in the IAIA MFA program. All applicants to the Institute of American Indian Arts’ Low Residency MFA in Creative Writing who are enrolled members of a Native American tribe or First Nation are eligible. The deadline is Friday, May 26, 2017, at 5 pm.

  • The Writing in the Margins Mentor Program pairs an emerging author from a marginalized social group with an experienced editor or traditionally published author in order to work closely on preparing an unpublished manuscript to submit for publication. This program is free of charge to the emerging author. Applications open twice a year, and are currently being taken through May 1 at the program’s website.
  • The Speculative Literature Foundation is currently raising funds for the next five years of its Diverse Worlds & Diverse Writers Grants.

  • As mentioned in the deadlines section, Con or Bust is accepting items for auction now through Sunday, April 23. Bidding will run from April 24 through May 7. This is Con or Bust’s principal fundraiser for the entire year, so please consider offering something for auction, bidding, or spreading the word.

Fandom News

  • Anathema has published its first issue; it is a free, online tri-annual magazine publishing speculative fiction (SF/F/H, the weird, slipstream, surrealism, fabulism, and more) by queer people of colour on every range of the LGBTQIA spectrum.
  • The African Speculative Fiction Society has announced the short list nominees for the 2017 Nommo Awards, awarded to speculative fiction published in 2015 or 2016 by Africans. The awards will be announced and presented at the Aké Festival in Nigeria in November 2017.
  • Cat Rambo has increased the number of Plunkett scholarship slots for her online classes, with three now available for each, “the third of which is specifically reserved for QUILTBAG and POC applicants.”

  • Silvia Moreno-Garcia is tracking “all short fiction and novels published during 2017 only in English-language speculative markets by Latin American authors.” Here is the list, which also has a link to a form for people to submit data.
  • Jack Jones Literary Arts, a multifaceted book publicity company, is hosting its first annual writing retreat in Eureka Springs, AR, from October 16–30, 2017. It is open exclusively to women of color; there are available nine fully-funded scholarships, travel stipends, and admissions fee reimbursements. The application deadline is May 1, 2017.
  • Lethe Press is seeking reprint submissions for two anthologies with approaching deadlines: Heiresses of Russ 2017, edited by Dayna Ingram and Steve Berman, will publish “quality works of the fantastic, the weird, the wondrous involving women (cis- and trans-) who identify as lesbian” (deadline April 30, 2017); and Transcendent 2: The Year’s Best Transgender Speculative Fiction, edited by Bogi Takács, will publish “the best work of transgender-themed fiction with elements of the strange, the weird, the fantastic, horror and science-fiction” (deadline May 30, 2017).

  • FIYAH: A Magazine of Speculative Black Fiction has published the 2016 Black SFF Writer Survey Report, which is “a contextualization tool” for past reports of anti-black bias in publishing: “With this survey, we are attempting to add what is probably the most neglected–and most important–perspective to the conversation: that of black writers themselves.”

  • As noted above, Con or Bust will be electing up to four members to its Board of Directors on March 19; candidate statements are due March 3 — two days from now! Anyone can be a candidate; if you are interested, or if you want to encourage someone else to run, head to the website for more information. Please spread the word — being a Director is a low time commitment, but Con or Bust’s continued operation depends on awesome people taking an interest!
  • Con or Bust’s annual auction will take place in mid-to-late April. Start thinking about what you might like to offer and what you might like to bid on — you’ll be able to offer items for bid well in advance of the auction (to be announced as soon as I get the website all squeaky-clean and ready).

Fandom News

  • The Horror Writers Association is accepting applications through March 15, 2017, for its Scholarship From Hell, which includes a trip to StokerCon and participation in the intensive, hands-on workshop environment of “Horror University.” StokerCon is April 27-30, 2017, in Long Beach, CA, USA.
  • Fear No Lit is accepting applications through August 31, 2017, for the Submerging Writer Fellowship. The Fellowship provides $500 toward AWP 18, $500 no-strings-attached, and a chapbook and launch party at AWP. Writers are eligible if they don’t have a book, a major award, or current participation in an MFA/PhD program.
  • Writing the Other is offering a five-week online course titled Writing Inclusive Fiction, taught by Nisi Shawl and K Tempest Bradford, that runs from April 6 – May 14, 2017. Pay-what-you-can-afford and scholarships are available (deadline March 28).

  • Launch Pad, a workshop for established writers that aims to provide a crash course in modern astronomy science, is taking applications through March 1. It is held in Laramie, WY, USA from June 4-10, 2017. Launch Pad generally covers all workshop expenses including meals and lodging, and is sometimes able to offer travel assistance as well.
  • Applications to the Clarion workshop are due March 1, and two application fees are being waived for queer women of color; [email protected] Clarion is June 25 – August 5, 2017, in San Diego, CA, USA.

  • Editor Jaym Gates is gauging interest in an anthology called NEVERTHELESS, SHE PERSISTED and asking “What awesome female authors (especially POC and LGBTQ, ESPECIALLY immigrant and trans authors) should I be reaching out to?”
  • Tony C. Smith, creator of the podcast StarShipSofa, is Kickstarting “an e-book anthology of stories that offer a greater representation of ALL the people of this beautiful rich world” called Everyone: Worlds Without Walls, through March 11, 2017.
  • The Salam Award for imaginative fiction has been announced; it is a short story award to promote science fiction and related genres of writing in Pakistan, and will be judged in 2017 by Jeff VanderMeer, Usman Malik, and Mahvesh Murad. Original stories are to be submitted by July 31, 2017.
