I’m pleased to announce that The Steampunk World’s Fair has donated a whopping twenty memberships to Con or Bust. The Steampunk World’s Fair is the world’s largest steampunk event and welcomes steampunk veterans or total curious bystanders, “no matter how you’re dressed, no matter what your background is, and no matter how much or little you’ve ever played with Steampunk!” It takes place from May 17-19, 2013, in Piscataway, New Jersey.
Con or Bust will accept requests for assistance to attend The Steampunk World’s Fair, and other cons in April, May, and June 2013, from February 15-25, 2013. Learn more.
Bidding is now live on Con or Bust’s annual online auction, which raises funds to help fans of color/non-white fans attend SFF cons. All you have to do is leave a comment on the auction offer you’re interested in before bidding closes, on Sunday, February 24 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern. (You may also want to subscribe to comments so you’ll know if you are outbid.)
There are already lots of great offers; you can search the site over in the sidebar, or browse the auction tags or the filterable Google Docs index. And there will be more offers posted, so keep checking back. Right now I have about 20 offers to post on behalf of others, and people have promised many more.
Which is to say: it’s not too late to offer things for auction, so please do! Last year we raised about $11,500 from the auction, which funded 28 different trips to cons over twelve months. To keep that going, we need all the auction offers we can get! You can submit an auction offer through a simple web form—no login required—and I’ll even host your pictures for you if necessary.

I’m pleased to announce that Balticon has donated two memberships to Con or Bust. Balticon is the Maryland Regional Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention; it takes place from May 24-27, 2013 in Hunt Valley, Maryland.
This year’s guests are:
Guest of Honor: Joe Haldeman
Artist Guest of Honor: Rick Sternbach
Special Guest: Nnedi Okorafor
Music/Filk Guest of Honor: Ada Palmer
Featured Filkers : Sassafrass (premiering SUNDOWN)
Balticon will have sign language interpreters at all major events and on call as needed.
Con or Bust will accept requests for assistance to attend Balticon, and other cons in April, May, and June 2013, from February 15-25, 2013. Learn more.
Con or Bust runs an annual online auction to raise money to help fans of color/non-white fans attend SFF cons. Last year’s auction raised enough money that, together with donations from cons, Con or Bust was able to help 25 fans attend cons 28 times (three people received assistance twice) over the last twelve months. That was Con or Bust’s first full year of helping people go to any SFF con of their choosing (Con or Bust started as WisCon-only), and it was more successful than I’d hoped.
Bidding on this year’s auction starts this Saturday, February 9, but we need many more auction items! The new website makes it super-easy to offer: all you need is an email address, which will not be posted publicly; no more LiveJournal logins required. Please consider offering something, or letting people know that auction items are wanted! Common offers are books, baked goods, character naming rights, jewelry, care packages, knitted goods, blog posts, and critiques, but those aren’t the only possibilities. Art prints? Lunch at a con? Volumes of a comic or manga series that you’re never going to re-read? Audio recordings of a short story or fanfic? Anything that’s legal, practical, and morally and ethically appropriate is welcome.
Learn more about the auction, or head straight to the form to submit auction items. And please link/reblog/retweet this far and wide!
I have one donated membership each available for a fan of color/non-white fan to the following upcoming cons (new registration or refund):
FOGCon, March 8-10, Walnut Creek, California, “a literary-themed San Francisco SF/F con in the tradition of Wiscon and Readercon.” Its theme is Law, Order & Crime; its Honored Guests are Terry Bisson and Susan R. Matthews.
EightSquaredCon, The 2013 Eastercon, March 29-April 1, Bradford, UK. Eastercon is the UK’s annual National Science Fiction Convention. Its Guests of Honour are Walter Jon Williams, Freda Warrington, Anne Sudworth and Edward James.
Because these are still available after the usual request period, how you request them is slightly different: use this form, first-come first-served. If you have general questions about eligibility, or are curious how the process usually works, see the request assistance page.
Con or Bust, which helps fans of color attend SFF cons, now has its own accounts on Twitter and Tumblr! These should be automagically updated with new post notifications from the main site here at http://con-or-bust.org/. Feel free to follow Con or Bust on Twitter or follow Con or Bust on Tumblr.
I have also set up crossposting to the existing LiveJournal community, for the convenience of those who’d like to keep following Con or Bust there.
And, naturally, there’s always the all-purpose RSS option.
Reminders: Con or Bust’s annual online fundraising auction starts taking bids on February 9, but you can submit things to be auctioned now or check out the current offerings! More information about the auction. And Con or Bust will be taking requests for assistance to attend cons in April, May, and June from February 15-25; how to request assistance.
Thanks, and please spread the word!
I’m very excited to welcome you to Con or Bust’s new home on its own domain.
