Portfolio review (by Pablo Defendini)

Item Name and Description:

I’ll perform a professional review and critique of your portfolio of illustration, graphic design, or digital product design work (no more than 20 pieces), bringing to bear more than 15 years’ worth of experience in the design field as an art director, digital product designer, and graphic designer. I’ll help you identify strong or weak work, cull your selection down to a manageable size that’s representative of your body of work, and give you an overall assessment of where you stand in relation to the rest of the professional field. I’ll be kind, but honest and straightforward—I’ll identify your strong work, but I’ll also call out weak work, and articulate what you can do to improve it.

Summerlong by Peter S. Beagle (signed ARC)

Item Name and Description: Beloved author Peter S. Beagle (The Last Unicorn) returns with this long-anticipated new novel, a beautifully bittersweet tale of passion, enchantment, and fate.

It was a typically miserable Puget Sound winter before the arrival of Lioness Lazos.  An enigmatic young waitress with strange abilities, when the lovely Lioness comes to Gardner Island even the weather takes notice.

As an impossibly beautiful spring leads into a perfect summer, Lioness is drawn to a complicated family. She is taken in by two disenchanted lovers—dynamic Joanna Delvecchio and scholarly Abe Aronson—visited by Joanna’s previously unlucky-in-love daughter, Lily. With Lioness in their lives, they are suddenly compelled to explore their deepest dreams and desires.

Lioness grows more captivating as the days grow longer. Her new family thrives, even as they may be growing apart. But lingering in Lioness’s past is a dark secret—and even summer days must pass.

ARC of Sarah Rees Brennan’s Aug. 2017 YA novel IN OTHER LANDS

Item Name and Description: Elliot doesn’t want to fight, keeps saying the wrong thing, and is definitely the grouchiest human in fantasyland.

Sometimes it’s not the kid you expect who falls through to magicland, sometimes it’s . . . Elliott. He’s grumpy, nerdy, and appalled by both the dearth of technology and the levels of fitness involved in swinging swords around. He’s a little enchanted by the elves and mermaids. Despite his aversion to war, work, and most people (human or otherwise) he finds that two unlikely ideas, friendship and world peace, may actually be possible.

“A subversive, sneaky, glorious tale of magic, longing, and growing into your wings.” — Holly Black, author of The Darkest Part of the Forest
